When a Sprain or Injury Needs Medical Evaluation

Minor injuries are common during daily activities, exercise, and sports. While some injuries improve with rest and home care, others may require medical evaluation to ensure proper healing.

Knowing when to seek care can help prevent long-term complications.

Signs of a Sprain

Sprains often occur when a joint is twisted or stretched beyond its normal range of motion. Common symptoms include:

  • Pain around the joint

  • Swelling

  • Bruising

  • Difficulty moving the joint

Ankle sprains are among the most frequent injuries seen in urgent care.

Signs of a More Serious Injury

Certain symptoms may indicate a more serious injury that requires medical evaluation.

These symptoms may include:

  • Severe pain

  • Inability to bear weight

  • Significant swelling

  • Numbness or tingling

  • Visible deformity

These signs may indicate a fracture or significant ligament injury.

Initial Treatment for Minor Injuries

Many mild injuries improve with rest and supportive care. The RICE method is commonly recommended:

  • Rest the injured area

  • Apply ice to reduce swelling

  • Use compression when appropriate

  • Elevate the injured limb

However, if symptoms persist or worsen, medical evaluation is recommended.
